1. Read the text and answer these questions.

• Who was Joseph McCarthy?   

He was a republican senator, who accused everyone from trade unión members to Hollywood stars of carrying out un-American activities or being communist agents.

• What werehis politics?

He is commonly applied the anti-communism crusade. He obtained benefits to his political visión thanks to the "red scare" who he increased.

• What were the first accusation he made?

In 1950 he gave a speech diring which he showed the audience a piece of paper with a list of 205 suposed active communists working in the State Department.

• Why do you think the American public belived him?

The American public was anxious for these communists to be identified and removed from the power.

• What other people did he go on to accuse? What werethe foundations for his accusations?

He used controversial techniques to identify and question alleged communist activist or sympathisers and often made accusations with little evidence.

• How and why did the reaction of the American public change?

McCarthy´s downfall came when he made accusations againts officers of the USA Army. The hearings were televised and the general public was able to see McCarthy´s brutal interrogation methods. Support for McCarthy quickly dimished and he was censured by the Senate for having abused his power as a senator. 

BEING A KENEDY ASSESOR IN THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS

Mr. PRESIDENT, 

American spy planes have taken pictures of nuclear missile sites being built in Cuba.

Also we have detected some ships and planes, possibly vfrom the USSR to Cuba with ammo and resources. So we are thinking that in Cuba the USSR is building a base from they could send missiles to USA in 20 min.

What can we do Mr. president?

• We could place a ring of American ships around cuba to stop any new missiles getting into the island from the USSR and take down every soviet plane that could bring resources. 
  
  
  

• Also we can press Cuba moving many planes with bombs to the cape Canavereal and moving tropos to press they with an invasión.

• And finally, with this situation, we can negociate a desarm and remove the blockade. But if they don´t acceed to the negociation, we would carry on with the invasión and bombs.

This plan would create tensions with the USSR. But if we don´t nothing they Will atack us with nuclear weaponds.
