URBAN LANDSCAPES
A city is an urban complex governed by a town hall and conformed by a large number of buildings, a complex road systems and very large and dense population, whose main economic activities are associated with the industry and the services. The word, as such, comes from the Latin civĭtas, Civitātis.
The city that I have chose to do the analysis is Vitoria, a city in País Vasco, Spain. It has more or less 250.000 habitatnt also it has been throughout history an important strategic point to the armys, trade and culture. Now we are going to start with the analysis of the city.
We can start with the historic center that already has the almond form of the old city around the cathedral. So it has a concentric pattern. Streets like Correria, Zapateria, Pintore Kalea and Aitzogile Kalea are the streets with more history in vitoria and they form an irregular pattern. It has a comercial and turism function.
Now we continue analycing the expansión zone. It was created by the burgeoisie when people satarted living in cities. Inside the walls there was no more space so they began to build outside walls.
It has an ortogonal pattern with some irregularities. It is a zone of beautiful and luminous buildings wit a residencial function and in each, lives the medium and upper class. The problem is that it is an area where the buildings are becoming more and more ancient. They do not have a very good urban transport system and have fewer public infrastructures than in areas closer to the center.
Finally regarding to the periphery we can see that it has grown very quickly due to the companies that form industrial polygonscaround the city. This has been attracting people and in turn other companies that started founding small urbanizations there. But now, with the growth of the city this areas form already part of the periphery of Vitoria. The problem of these areas is their distance from the center of the city, they are as "apart from everyday life" and have scarce infrastructure
